Stephen Elliott (James Franco) is a writer come to less. His past successes cause him frustration, he has ADHD, consumes drugs and all kinds of substances (especially Adderall), has child traumas, is problematic and narcissistic and is surrounded by insecurities. Among his main themes that cause him his particular madness are Paris Hilton and sadomasochism. One day he learns the case of Hans Reiser (Christian Slater), the main accused of the murder of his wife. Obsessed with the case, he decides to put all his attention on it and write a book about it.
